the gns/ntds utilities use a static ip address as the cluster vip. if you select the static ips for vip option, then the cluster vip address is set in your /etc/inet/hosts file. if you select the dynamic ip addresses for vip option, then it is set in your /etc/inet/hosts file dynamically. if you select both option, then the dynamic ip addresses are set in the /etc/inet/hosts file and also in the /etc/inet/hosts.cluster file.
if you have a domain name server defined for your subdomain and an oracle clusterware managed vip in the vip range of 10.x.x, the nis domain name resolution might not work properly for the cluster subdomain unless you set the domain name server for the subdomain in the /etc/inet/hosts.cluster file.
for a vfs cluster where the cluster vip range is 20.x.x, the cluster needs to have public ip addresses set to the vip range. if you select the dynamic private ip addresses for vip option, then the public ip address of the cluster is assigned to the vip in the system in the /etc/inet/hosts file. if you select the fixed private ip addresses for vip option, then the public ip address of the cluster is assigned to the vip in the system in the /etc/inet/hosts file. if you select both option, then the public ip addresses are set in the /etc/inet/hosts file and also in the /etc/inet/hosts.cluster file.
