Indian Massage

Ayurveda therapies have varied and evolved over more than two millennia.[2] Therapies include herbal medicines, special diets, meditation, yoga, massage, laxatives, enemas, and medical oils.[9][10] Ayurvedic preparations are typically based on complex herbal compounds, minerals, and metal substances (perhaps under the influence of early Indian alchemy or rasashastra). Ancient Ayurveda texts also taught surgical techniques, including rhinoplasty, kidney stone extractions, sutures, and the extraction of foreign objects.[11][12]

Ayurvedic practitioners regard physical existence, mental existence, and personality as three separate elements of a whole person with each element being able to influence the others.[53] This holistic approach used during diagnosis and healing is a fundamental aspect of Ayurveda. Another part of Ayurvedic treatment says that there are channels (srotas) which transport fluids, and that the channels can be opened up by massage treatment using oils and Swedana (fomentation). Unhealthy, or blocked, channels are thought to cause disease.[54]

Massage with oil is commonly prescribed by Ayurvedic practitioners.[70] Oils are used in a number of ways, including regular consumption, anointing, smearing, head massage, application to affected areas,[71][failed verification] and oil pulling. Liquids may also be poured on the patient's forehead, a technique called shirodhara.[72]

Ayurvedic massages are different from your typical massage in that they generously incorporate soothing, warm oils, which are infused with healing herbs. Throughout these massages, the oils sink deeply into our skin, with the goal of purifying the blood, nourishing the cells, and removing toxins from the system.

This creates a mild abrasive effect, which is ideal for removing impurities and stimulating the metabolic process.

Objectives: To objectively measure the differences between patients with stroke who received Ayurvedic massage in addition to standard Physiotherapy (PT) versus those who received only standard PT.

Materials and methods: The study was a prospective case control study, retrospectively analysed. The setting was a tertiary level hospital with neuro-rehabilitation unit. Fifty-two patients undergoing acute inpatient rehabilitation were prospectively followed post stroke. They were self-selected one month from the event for Ayurvedic massage with regular PT or PT alone. Twenty five received Ayurvedic massage with PT and twenty seven received only PT. All participants completed treatment. Information related to age, gender, National Institute of Health Stroke Scale result, number of co-morbidities, and whether cases were deemed simple or complex were taken at baseline. All patients received 6 hours of physical therapy averaged over a week. Massage was delivered daily for a total of 10 sessions followed by steam application.

Results: Patients were categorized as simple or complicated stroke based on events prior to rehabilitation. Both simple and complicated patients who received Ayurvedic massage had lower MAS and need for antispastic drugs, achieved standing with minimal assistance sooner, and had better locomotion at discharge. All these differences were significant.

Conclusion: Utilizing Ayurvedic massage in post stroke patients with flaccidity can promote faster standing with minimal assistance and lead to less need for antispastic drugs at discharge. 041b061a72
