Launy Grondahl Trombone Concerto
Launy Grondahl Trombone Concerto is a short, humorous piece that is poignant with an energetic, driving rhythm punctuated with the call and response patterns of duets. It is a work that can be played on any instrument as a solo or as an ensemble work. The Trombone Concerto is a dramatic piece that can easily be expanded to be a larger number of instruments. It could be played as a teamwork and the sections can be orchestrated and expanded for large audiences to hear this dramatic and eloquent piece.
The soloist is instructed to play a warm and resonant, lyrical theme marked 'crois du drap' ('echo of a cloak'). Later, the soloist will be instructed to play with a more labored, dense, upper range. The first part is short, but the last section is long and athletic. The solo trombone, played throughout the work, is a highly versatile and expressive solo instrument and Launy Grondahl knows how to use it to great effect in this work. The work contains a secondary solo for cello and trombone to be played at appropriate moments. The slower section can be expanded for large ensembles, and the dynamic can be increased. By decreasing the number of brasses, the work can be played as a quartet.
